Metabolic Syndrome: Treating, Reversing, and Preventing Without Causing Birth Defects. Wow, What a Concept

Have you seen the Annals of Internal Medicine 5/2022 article “Preconception Antidiabetic Drugs in Men and Birth Defects in Offspring: A Nationwide Cohort Study” about the profound disruption of epigenetics by the diabetes drug metformin. It’s a must read for anyone researching the benefits or side effects related to the use of metformin.

We already knew how bad it was for the gut due to disruption of the intestinal tight junctions. The last thing you want to do if trying to stay healthy or reverse chronic disease.

We need to quickly get everyone off this terrible drug almost immediately. Heck, just optimizing vitamin D levels (70-90) is 3 times more powerful at helping blood sugar/insulin correction than metformin anyway. And, everyone needs vitamin D levels optimized.

Metformin & Birth Defects

So, per the Annals of IM article, men who use metformin within 3 months of conceiving a child increase the risk of birth defects in their male children by 40%!!! Genital birth defects!!!

Wow, talk about a profound negative impact on epigenetics that gets passed down to the next generation. But, of course, it’s not just the next generation that suffers. We know that epigenetics is passed down to the next 6-8 generations. The poor next 6-8 generations of the man who used metformin within 3 months of conceiving a child.

In one of the videos I did on this study (click here to view on my youtube channel), I raised the troubling question “does it bother anyone else that women are given metformin to help them get pregnant?” In the videos on this study, I also discussed other studies that outline how metformin’s mechanism of action adversely impacts epigenetics in both men and women.

Blood Sugar Meds, Impact, Treatment

Now, pretty much all the blood sugar meds have either a terrible impact on the gut and/or a disturbing impact on an already overworked/beat up pancreas. So, what is there to do?

Easy, follow the science of course. And what does the science say? Fix everything wrong in the body at the same time you are fixing the insulin resistance/prediabetes (or even the early diabetes itself).

Years ago, a great study came out about vitamin D receptor (VDR) resistance in the gut making it very difficult to avoid flares in autoimmune diseases of the gut (ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, celiac disease) and avoid recurrent C. diff. infections. First, every cell in our body has vitamin D receptors but there are so many more in the gut than in any other tissue. Thus, vitamin D and vitamin D receptors must be super important in the gut according to those researchers.

What Happens When Vitamin D Receptors Become Resistant In The Gut

What happens when VDRs become resistant in the gut? The lining of the gut starts to produce pro-inflammatory cytokines such as NF kappa beta. The lining of the gut stops making proteins to keep away bad bugs in the gut. These are called antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). This causes disruption of the intestinal microbiome and excessive gut inflammation. But also, drives the development of excessive inflammation throughout the body.

By correcting the vitamin D receptor resistance, they saw optimization of the intestinal microbiome, clearing of the excessive inflammation in the gut and systemically. Yes, clearing of excessive inflammation in the whole body (and brain of course). They also said that this correction of the vitamin D receptor resistance is exactly what you would want to do if you want to prevent anxiety, depression, diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, dementia, Alzheimers, cancer, autoimmune disease etc… You can see the blog I wrote specifically about this study that I named “Vitamin D Does It Again.” (See links two articles below.)

So, a couple years ago a new study was published that looked at all the promising information from the original data suggesting that this could be just what was needed to prevent and treat metabolic syndrome. Important considering that ⅔ of Americans are prediabetic. Guess what? The researchers (some of my all time favorite researchers who happen to be from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Jun Sun, Danika Bakke, and Yang Dia. ps. I went to medical school at the University of Illinois at Rockford) called correcting VDR resistance in the gut a “nuclear bomb” against metabolic syndrome! More exactly “Regulation of Microbiota by Vitamin D Receptor: A Nuclear Weapon in Metabolic Diseases” published in the journal Nuclear Receptor Research, vol.5 (2018).

Resensitizing Vitamin D receptors That Have Become Resistant

So, how do we resensitize vitamin D receptors that have become resistant?

Piece of cake! Yes, the body is so smart and so good at healing once it is finally given a chance to do so. We tend to think in allopathic medicine that once someone has a chronic disease the best we can do is put a temporary bandage medicine on a symptom. But no. Once you know what drives chronic disease and how to reverse it, you will never look at your patients the same ever again.

And, they won’t look at you the same either. You will be the person who made their chronic diseases go away. And, stopped them from just getting one new problem on top of their old problem again and again and again…

To reset VDR sensitivity, what you need to use is the daily triad of 3 supplements. Vitamin D, probiotics, and butyrate. Yes, that’s pretty much it. I know you are familiar with the supplements vitamin D and probiotics but I doubt you know how to use them optimally to prevent and reverse all chronic disease. Yet! At least not until you become the expert in your community in doing this kind of work. But butyrate?

What Is Butyrate?

Butyrate is a short chain fatty acid (SCFA) that is supposed to be made by the good bacteria in the intestine. But, of course, our good bacterial numbers are decimated in most people because of metformin, antibiotics, stress, NSAIDS, acid blocking medicines, environmental toxins, oral BCPs etc… The list goes on and on.

Now it’s very important what exact supplements you try to use to fix this issue and all chronic disease. Please refer to my book “A Nurse Practitioners Guide to Autoimmune Medicine. Reversing and Preventing All Autoimmunity,” my advanced scientific course “The Autoimmune Paradigm: An Experts Course,” and this website for more information on exactly why this is so.

So just like in my book, I am going to tell you exactly what supplement and what dose to use with this triad. Please refer to my website supplement store (or click ‘Supplement Store’ in the navigation menu) for the manufacturer of each of these named supplements.

Supplement Triad

First, D3 5000 starting with 1-2 capsules daily with food. Vitamin D is a fat soluble nutrient thus it is better absorbed with food in our stomach. Of course, in an ideal world, you want to test vitamin D values in a blood test to get everyone to an optimal level of 70-90. In my book I go over this, including how patients can do this themselves! Patients themselves can write for their own blood work. 2 different ways!

Second, the probiotic Hi Flora, 2 capsules everyday alternating every 3 months with Megaspore 2 capsules daily.

Third, Butyrate Complex 2 capsules twice a day.

Most likely you will only need to use this triad until the metabolic syndrome has been cleared sufficiently.

Continue the daily vitamin D and use these probiotics, 2 capsules once a week, longterm to maintain changes. And not just the changes in the metabolic syndrome. But the multiorgan system disease reversal in general. Remember, this is exactly what you want to do to address all chronic disease.

The Best Test for Zinc Deficiency is RBC (Red Blood Cell)

Zinc is a crucial mineral that your body relies on for essential functions and optimal performance. It is considered an essential mineral because your body cannot produce it naturally, so you must obtain it through diet and/or supplements.Note: In Dr. Bilstrom's book:...
